A Bowlful of Generosity

I can still smell the aromas of last Sunday’s homemade soup cook-off. Tasty soups and great fellowship helped make our Fifth Sunday Fellowship a success. It was also a fundraiser for our summer mission trip.

Everyone had a chance to sample nine delicious soups. No one knew who prepared which soups. It was a challenge to decide which of the nine was best. Finally, I decided. Along with others I returned for a bowl of my favorite. We voted by placing our offering for the meal in the basket next to the one we determined was best.

Money from each basket was counted. The top three entries were announced. We had a surprise winner. It wasn’t Jay’s “super hot, get outta here” chili. Nor was it Angie’s creamy potato soup. The winner was the elementary church school class entry of “vegetable chili with bacon.” They won a big bottle of hot sauce and raised $289 for the mission trip.

It seems they made their soup that morning during their church school lesson on generosity. Each child wore an apron. Crowding the table were a variety of ingredients provided by their teacher as well as some they had brought from home. Together they chose what to add to the soup. Each student contributed. The result was a winner enjoyed by many.

Each Sunday, we bring our tithes and offerings. Doing so, we want to honor God with our giving. As we receive the offering, each person adds their portion. Together we present these offerings and ourselves to God’s service. Come, let us honor God’s trust in us.
